Alleged harasser sentenced for fraud

ANCHORAGE — A woman accused, along with another man, of harassing a Valley-based state employee so badly she left the state has received 21 months in prison on unrelated federal fraud charges.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney in Anchorage, Mary Elizabeth Transki, 26, of Anchorage, was sentenced on fraud charges. The U.S. Attorney claims Transki and her husband, Floyd Leroy Lee Jr., set up a fake company, Platinum Investments, and hooked investors.

Lee and Transki didn’t invest the money received, though. Instead, they spent it on themselves. All-told they hauled in $62,000 “with the promise of high-yield returns in a brief amount of time,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s press release. Lee and Transki pleaded guilty in June to securities fraud and Lee to an additional count of mail fraud. He’s set to be sentenced Aug. 30.
“In sentencing Transki to 21 months in prison, Judge (Sharon) Gleason noted that Transki’s role in the fraud scheme had been greater than simply a ministerial role as Transki had maintained. Judge Gleason also noted that Lee and Transki had preyed on small investors who are the type of individuals least able to absorb the loss of investment funds,” according to the U.S. Attorney release.
Lee and Transki were the stars of court filings in a lawsuit against the state of Alaska filed by Lisa Carpenter, who said that during her time as an employee of the Offices of Children Services in Wasilla the state didn’t do enough to protect her from their harassment.
The harassment included false reports that she’d assaulted the two people and their children, allegations she was an embezzler, animal abuser, liar and an impersonator of an OCS employee.
They also allegedly placed phony ads on Craigslist pointing people to Carpenter’s home for everything from children’s toys to cheap vehicles and sexual favors. Carpenter resigned her job, but the harassment didn’t let up and she left the state.

Anchorage Woman Sentenced to 21 Months in Prison for Role in Investment Fraud Scheme

U.S. Attorney’s OfficeAugust 20, 2013
  • District of Alaska(907) 271-5071
ANCHORAGE—U.S. Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced today that an Anchorage woman has been sentenced in federal court in Anchorage for her role in an investment fraud scheme that targeted small investors in Anchorage in 2011 and 2012.
Mary Elizabeth Transki, 26, from Anchorage, Alaska, was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason to 21 months in prison following her conviction for one count of securities fraud.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Bottini, who prosecuted the case, Transki’s co-defendant in the case, Floyd Leroy Lee, Jr., set up an investment company—Platinum Investments Inc.—in Anchorage in October 2010. Lee, assisted by Transki, subsequently solicited investors with the promise of high-yield returns in a brief amount of time. Between September 2011 and March 2012, Lee and Transki took in approximately $62,000 in investment funds. After receiving the money, Lee and Transki did not invest it as promised and instead used the funds for their own personal use and benefit.
Lee and Transki were indicted by a federal grand jury in April 2013 for one count each of securities fraud related to the investment fraud scheme. Lee was also indicted for one count of mail fraud. Transki and Lee each pled guilty in June 2013 to the securities fraud charge, and Lee additionally pled guilty to the mail fraud count. Floyd Leroy Lee, Jr. is scheduled for sentencing on August 30, 2013, in Anchorage, Alaska.
In sentencing Transki to 21 months in prison, Judge Gleason noted that Transki’s role in the fraud scheme had been greater than simply a ministerial role as Transki had maintained. Judge Gleason also noted that Lee and Transki had preyed on small investors who are the type of individuals least able to absorb the loss of investment funds.
Ms. Loeffler commends the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their investigation of this case

Second fraudster sentenced

ANCHORAGE — A second person accused of harassing a Valley child services worker until she left the state has been sentenced in federal court for an investment fraud scheme.

Floyd Leroy Lee Jr., 32, of Anchorage, was sentenced to three years and one month in prison for the scam that ran from September 2011 to March 2012 under the phony company name Platinum Investments Inc, the U.S. Attorney in Anchorage says in a Friday press release.

“Lee, assisted by his co-defendant in the case, Mary Elizabeth Transki, solicited investors with the promise of high-yield returns in a brief amount of time,” according to the press release.

In its short run, the company managed to pull in $63,000, which Lee and Transki then used “for their own personal use and benefit,” according to the press release.
Transki got 21 months in prison in a hearing Aug. 19.
“In sentencing Lee to 37 months in prison (U.S. District) Judge (Sharon) Gleason noted that Lee and Transki had preyed on small investors who are the type of individuals least able to absorb the loss of investment funds,” the press release states.
Eventually Carpenter resigned her job but, according to her lawsuit, Lee and Transki kept up the harassment.
In addition to the reports, they allegedly placed phony ads on Craigslist pointing people to Carpenter’s home for everything from children’s toys to cheap vehicles and sexual favors.
Carpenter claimed to at one point have been driven to change her phone number and stand on the deck of her home defending it with a gun. She eventually left the state and later filed a lawsuit against the state.
